UX, UI and the overall design

In this article instead of setting off on the overdone quest to define what each individual ‘designer’ does or does not do, we are going to discuss why it is the execution of a holistic product thinking process when designing that is responsible for the best experience possible for the customer.

Yes, UX design is not UI design and digital designers don’t code. There is no disputing the distinct differences and importance of each role and process. However, agencies and designers alike are doing their work, clients and customers a disservice if they compartmentalise their design process and work in singularly defined design roles.

UX design — The why

UX design is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. It entails research and analysis of all customer-related information, an organisation of content and sorting so a user can find what they’re looking for quickly and easily.

The goal of UX design is to create a digital product a user feels comfortable with. This embraces the way a product functions and a user operates it: content hierarchy, clear navigation, and functionality of the visual elements. But the most important is that all this helps solve a user’s problem. A design must also be created in compliance with technical and business specifications.

UI design — The how

UI design is the process of making software or computerised device interfaces with a focus on looks and style. UI design makes achieving user goals aesthetically pleasing because of a UX designer’s creativity. So, we can consider UI an integral part of UX. But UI design is mostly oriented on the how of UX design.

The why and the how are inseparable and are parts of the one whole and need to be executed as a seamless process. When customers use a product, they don’t individually experience the UX and the UI. It doesn't matter if you have a beautifully architected app or visually dynamic design content if no one can use it. Customers experience products holistically with everything blending together. Creating a product that provides a successful harmonious experience needs all parts of the design to be equally exceptional.

To be a successful designer, we need to embrace the UX/UI assimilation and specialise in crafting an end-to-end service that delivers the best possible experiences for our customers, through a holistic product thinking process where UX/UI design, development and execution are integrated into a seamless design approach.

Conclusion

The distinction between UX and UI is real and important, but treating them as isolated disciplines ultimately weakens the experience we create. Users don’t interact with processes, roles or deliverables; they experience products as a single, cohesive whole. To them, the why and the how are inseparable.

Designers and agencies do their best work when they move beyond rigid role boundaries and embrace a holistic product thinking mindset. By integrating UX, UI, development, and execution into a seamless design process, teams can focus on what truly matters: solving real user problems in a way that feels intuitive, usable, and engaging.

Great experiences aren’t the result of perfect hand‑offs between silos - they’re the outcome of collaborative, end‑to‑end thinking that puts the customer at the centre of every decision.
